MassMutual Announces Leadership Transition with New CFO Appointment

Mutual life insurance company Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual), founded in 1851, has planned significant leadership changes that will begin in 2025. Betsy Ward, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the past three decades, will retire at the end of this year. Ward has been instrumental in driving transformative growth, strengthening the company’s financial position, and delivering value to policyowners. Mary Jane (MJ) Fortin, an industry veteran with over 35 years of experience, will succeed Ward as CFO, effective January 1, 2025. Fortin brings extensive expertise in financial services, having held senior roles at Thrivent Financial, Allstate Financial, AIG, The Hartford, and PwC.

As CFO, Fortin will oversee corporate strategy, financial planning, treasury, capital management, and actuarial functions. Roger Crandall, MassMutual’s Chairman, President, and CEO, expressed confidence in her ability to uphold the company’s financial strength and foster innovative growth strategies. Additionally, Vy Ho, a seasoned actuary with nearly 30 years of experience, has been named Chief Actuary. These appointments reinforce MassMutual’s commitment to its mission of providing financial security and protection to its policyowners while continuing its legacy of excellence and stability.
